The same puzzle family

Nonogram, picross, griddler, and Japanese crossword all describe the same game: fill cells on a grid based on numeric clues, and reveal a picture.

Common names

"Nonogram" is the generic English term. "Picross" became popular thanks to puzzle games on Nintendo consoles. "Japanese crossword" is widely used in Russian and Eastern European communities.

Where Japanese crosswords fit

The puzzle type was independently developed in Japan in the late 1980s, which is where the name Japanese crossword comes from. The rules are identical to Western nonograms.

Which term to use

Use whichever word your audience knows best. On this site the terms are interchangeable, and every page works the same way whether you call it a nonogram, picross, or Japanese crossword.
